Southern Growth’s 2008 annual conference and Report on the Future of the South will focus on youth development and engagement. They will include strategies for building policies and partnerships to foster youth leadership skills, workforce readiness, volunteerism, entrepreneurship and the traits to become active, responsible citizens.

 

Hosted by Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, the conference will include keynote presentations by Alma Powell, Chair, America’s Promise; Michael Furdyk, Co-founder of Taking IT Global; Adrian Talbott, Executive Director, Generation Engage; as well as panel discussions and best practices on youth development and engagement. UNEMPLOYMENT RATE OF U.S. SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS DROPS TO RECORD LOW

The latest available data from 2006 showed that the unemployment rate for U.S. scientists and engineers dropped to 2.6 percent. The total number of scientists and engineers grew by one million between 2003 and 2006. The workers that had either a doctorate or a professional degree had an even lower unemployment rate of 1.6 percent. Business employed almost 70 percent of all of scientists and engineers. GLOBAL INFLATION AT RISK IN FOOD CRISIS

European central bankers are warning of "significant" inflation risks as global food prices surge, according to the International Herald Tribune (May 5). European Central Bank president, Jean-Claude Trichet, said that inflation risks were rising but that growth, "particularly in emerging markets," is strong. Gathered for a meeting of the Group of 10 industrialized nations, bankers noted that China, India and Russia had all increased demands for commodities, driving up inflation. "Food pressures could be one of the most serious problems we have to face now," said Poland's National Bank president, Slawomir Skrzpek.

NEW REPORT RELEASED ON UNINSURED CHILDREN IN THE SOUTH

The Southern Institute on Children and Families has released its third edition of the Uninsured Children in the South report. The report provides state-level data on the number of uninsured children, their ages, and the poverty status of their families. Nearly half of the nation's 9 million uninsured children live in the South, though only 38 percent of U.S. children do so. Rates of uninsured children among Southern Growth member states range from a high of 15.6 percent in Mississippi to a low of 6.3 percent in Alabama.

THE FUTURE FOR OFFSHORING

CNN reports that the Wharton School and CareerBuilder.Com have teamed up to produce a study of offshoring in the US. The study, Jobs Beyond Borders, surveyed hiring managers and workers throughout the US. The results include the belief by employers that offshoring enables them to create better jobs in the US. At the same, time the majority of employers believe "high-skills service jobs are at equal or more risk (for offshoring) than low skilled jobs."
